A screen shows one thing that a worksheet never does — the pause before an answer is submitted. On paper you see only whether the result was right. Hesitating is not automatically a bad sign. Often it means a result is being checked internally before it is committed, which is a habit worth protecting rather than curing. The pause to watch out for is the other kind: knowing the answer and not daring to enter it, which usually shows up in people who have been corrected in public too often. That is not a problem of ability but of feeling safe enough to try.
