Memory Game

Everybody has played a flip-and-match board, and most people play it by guessing: turn a card, see it is wrong, turn another one without retaining anything. That approach converts a memory test into a luck test. This version is the most stripped-back one in our library, with no theme or ornament competing for attention, which makes it the right place to practise doing it properly.

The method that works is to open cards in order on your first pass, sweeping left to right along each row, and to treat that pass as data collection rather than scoring. The moment a picture repeats, go back and claim the pair. Players who work this way finish faster over the long run, even though the opening minute looks like wasted effort.
